Oscar Putney is a recurring character in Season 2 of the Showtime series Penny Dreadful. He is the owner and operator of Putney Family Waxworks, a family business waxwork museum struggling to stay afloat with competition from the more famous Madame Tussauds museum in London.

History[]

Oscar Putney build his waxwork museum from the ground up, but times were tough with fierce competition from Madame Tussauds. When a disfigured man calling himself John Clare walked into the museum looking for work, he seized on the opportunity to exploit the man's visage and hired him soon after.[1]

Mr. Clare was an able employee, and Putney put him to work constructing dioramas. Putney also began construction of a series of jail cells himself, hiring outside workmen to undertake the project in secret. When the jail was complete, he had his daughter Lavinia lure Mr. Clare into a cell to become the first of the Putney Family Waxworks living freak show.[2]

Oscar visited Mr. Clare in the cell and offered him a small cut of the profits for his cooperation. He had severely misjudged the Creature's strength however, and was taken completely by surprise when his prisoner tore the cage apart and snapped Octavia's neck. Oscar himself became the next victim when the enraged Creature rammed his face repeatedly against the unyielding stone of the prison wall.[3]
