London of the late 1800s is the primary setting for the Showtime series Penny Dreadful. It is a thriving metropolis in the grip of an industrial revolution. By day it is a hive of activity, and by night its seedier, and sometimes more sinister elements emerge.
The infamous serial killer known as Jack the Ripper has left an indelible mark on the city. While he hasn't struck in years, the populace has developed a renewed interest in things macabre. Madame Tussauds and the Putney Family Waxworks vie for patronage with their dioramas and wax figures depicting things both sublime and horrific, and Londoners themselves lend a keen ear to any gossip of murders, or other sinister matters.
The truth is closer than many of them would dare to think. Vampires were forced from a nest at the ports, only to be hunted down again in Soho by Sir Malcolm Murray and his small band of followers.[1] Murders of a grisly nature have plagued the city during nights of the full moon, and the victims appear to have been mauled by a beast.[2] A group of nightcomer witches convened in secret, indulging in human sacrifice to fuel their wicked power.[3]
