Octavia Putney helped her husband's waxwork museum business by managing the business's finances, but times were tough with fierce competition from Madame Tussauds. When a disfigured man calling himself John Clare walked into the museum looking for work, her husband opted to hire the man, although Octavia was fiercely resistant at first, citing Mr. Clare's disfigurement as a problem.
Initially sceptical about Oscar's plans for their disfigured new employee, Octavia was gradually won over. Oscar contracted some workmen to construct several jail cells within which they would house a new freakshow exhibit, and when these were ready Mr. Clare was lured in by by Oscar and Octavia's daughter Lavinia. The three of them gathered to speak to their captive, and Octavia remained scornful throughout the encounter.
Octavia and Oscar later visited Mr. Clare in the cell and Oscar offered him a small cut of the profits for his cooperation. The couple had severely misjudged the Creature's strength however, and were taken completely by surprise when their prisoner tore the cage apart and snapped Octavia's neck moments before he killed her husband.
